NEXT DROP IS BEING EARNED

The calling

More than the title.

For Ishmael, Jiu-Jitsu is one part of a wider calling. He is a husband, father, grandfather, instructor, competitor and Realtor, but his faith in God sets the standard he takes into every role.

This is not a story about collecting labels. It is about making the work point to something larger than the result, inside the academy, at home and wherever he gets the chance to lead.

The beginning

A brotherhood worth staying for.

Ishmael found martial arts at 35, originally chasing cage fights. After several scheduled opponents dropped out, he fell in love with Jiu-Jitsu in the gi.

A belt-test letter gave him his first look at Black Belt speeches and the community around them. He found a brotherhood he wanted in his life, then kept competing and teaching Jiu-Jitsu around the country.

The return

The mat was still there.

Two serious injuries kept Ishmael off the mats for months. As a Brown Belt, discouragement brought him close to walking away from the sport altogether. Prayer, reflection and the choice to return gave him a different answer.

Training for the 2017 Houston Open, he won his division and received his Black Belt on the podium. More than nine years later, he added a 2025 World Master title. The title matters, but the return is what made it possible.
