Hands Raised - Jimmy Tat

"I don't allow a loss to define me."

The Grind

Jimmy Tat didn't walk onto the mats chasing gold. He started training BJJ to learn how to defend himself — nothing more. But somewhere along the way, the sport got its hooks in him. What began as self-defense turned into a genuine love for competition, and that love has fueled his drive to keep improving, day after day, ever since. Now a Black Belt out of Checkmat Corona, he trains with the same purpose that got him started: get better, stay sharp, keep showing up.

The Setback

Every competitor loses. What separates the ones who keep climbing is what they do with it. For Jimmy, a loss isn't something to dwell on — it's information. He feels the disappointment, lets it motivate him, and moves straight into the next training session. No spiraling, no excuses. Just the next rep, the next round, the next shot at getting it right.

The Comeback

That mindset is the engine behind everything Jimmy does. He's built his approach to the sport — and to setbacks — around continuous improvement: small steps, taken consistently, that compound into real growth. He's not chasing a single moment of glory. He's stacking days.

In Their Words

"I believe in the power of continuous improvement. Every small step forward, no matter how incremental, contributes to long-term growth and brings me closer to achieving bigger goals."

Hands Raised Moment

For Jimmy, the hand doesn't go up because a loss never happened — it goes up because he never let one stop him. Resilient. Disciplined. Committed to the process. That's the version of Jimmy Tat that keeps showing up, and keeps earning it.
